In celebration of the series’ fiftieth anniversary, McClelland & Stewart is proud to announce the relaunch of the New Canadian Library.
Begun in 1958 by Jack McClelland and Malcolm Ross, the NCL was the first paperback series dedicated solely to Canadian literature. From its inception, it has been synonymous with the best that has been thought, felt, and written in Canada, and it has ensured that major books have remained in print and readily accessible to the reading public. Spanning more than two hundred years of writing in 100 titles, the series publishes the country’s greatest writers, including Margaret Atwood, Morley Callaghan, Margaret Laurence, Stephen Leacock, Hugh MacLennan, Michael Ondaatje, and Gabrielle Roy.
To mark this important milestone, the NCL is being relaunched in newly designed, modern trade paperback editions, allowing a fresh readership to discover the diversity, range, and quality of Canada's literature. The books, first selected by the general editor and advisory board, will still include afterwords by illustrious names present and past, from Alistair MacLeod to P.K. Page. As the series embarks on its next half-century, we are proud to continue publishing these outstanding books by our country’s greatest authors.
The New Canadian Library now has it’s own Facebook Application! You can use the app to create a list of your favourite NCL titles to share with your friends. You can also write reviews or compare your lists with other readers. Plus, we’ve asked 10 famous Canadians to create their own lists, including Farley Mowat, Jane Urquhart, Terry Fallis, Bob Rae, and Anne Michaels. What favourite Canadian books do you have in common with them? Visit the M&S Facebook page, select the NCL tab at the top of the page, and find out.
