Letter from the President
One hundred years is a milestone that few companies
ever achieve, let alone book publishers in an ever-changing,
challenging, and competitive marketplace. I am fortunate to have the
honour and good timing to be President and Publisher of McClelland &
Stewart at this seminal moment. To celebrate our anniversary, we have
an exciting year planned. We have updated our corporate identity to
reflect both our proud past and the dynamism and enthusiasm with
which we greet our next century. The new design is a modern version
of an
M&S logo that dates to the 1940s, although in that version the
archer was pointing his arrow at the back of the horse's head (which
may well have been intentional, given the self-deprecating nature of
book publishers). I hope you agree that it is both striking and
reflective of our classic past and exciting future.
In fall 2005 we also moved offices. Our new location is a beautiful old former
piano factory on Sherbourne at Adelaide in Toronto. Original hardwood
floors, exposed brick, windows that open, and a lovely little courtyard
make it the perfect place to showcase what we do. In fact, the first
M&S office was located on Adelaide Street!
For the centenary, we will be working in
partnership with PEN Canada and World
Literacy of Canada. Canada Post has granted us a commemorative stamp; we
have a designated M&S Day announced in Parliament; a fabulous gala in June
to honour our incredible roster of authors; special publications
throughout the year, including a fully illustrated company history
complemented by the voices of authors, booksellers, and industry
insiders; bookstore promotions across the country; and numerous other
exciting events and promotions that are currently in the development
stage. Suffice it to say, we intend to do it up right and mark an
important milestone by paying tribute to worthy literary causes, and,
most important, promoting what has been the hallmark of M&S for a century -
great Canadian writing in its many forms.
Doug Pepper,
President & Publisher
