Our new logo was created by Toronto design firm Spencer Francey Peters. Its depiction of an archer and chariot is a modernized version of M&S's 1946 logo. The original logo was inspired by these lines from William Blake's Milton:
new logo
Bring me my Bow of burning gold:
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of fire!

The typeface used in the logo is called Mrs.Eaves, named after Sarah Eaves, John Baskerville's mistress. As Baskerville was setting up his printing and type business, Mrs. Eaves moved in with him as a housekeeper and creative assistant. She became his wife immediately after the death of her first husband, Robert Eaves. Sarah completed the printing of the unfinished volumes that John Baskerville left upon his death.

This classic eighteenth-century typeface was redesigned in 1996 by Zuzana Licko.

Starting in January 2006, the logo will appear on all new M&S publications.
